I am long time Office97 user. Recently udated 97 to Word2000.

Were is my spellchecker? Errors noted but no replacemetns suggested.

Unable to uninstall Word2000 or Office97. When I attempt uninstall the installation disks for Office97 are demanded. When put in a new installation is started.

Can I go to a prior restore point and get my Word97 back?

Word97 will not install over 2000. Cannot access winword.exe to delete.

Suggestions?

Carl

Perhaps forum68 would be better place for this.

Are you running windows XP?

What exactly did you do? Did you have full Office 97 installed and then installed just Word 2000 on top? Did that install offer to update, and finish correctly? Word 2000 has of course got a spell checker, so presumably your 'upgrade' went wrong somewhere.

As to uninstalling 97 - the new installation is presumably just because the disk is autorunning. If you cancel the new install, what happens? Alternatively, instead of uninstalling from add/remove programs, have you tried running the 97 install? It should detect your installation (if system still thinks 97 is installed) - and offer options - including uninstall.

Not sure what using system restore to go back would do. If you can't remove 97 by above method without it, it might let you if you go back before you installed 2000.

btw - what feature of word 2000 do you need that 97 hasn't got?

Try System Restore if this is only a recent install of Word 2000, you wouldn't want to go back months to a very old restore point, because everything (not just Word) reverts back to that time.

Is there any "Detect and Repair" options via the current Word's Help Menu, that you could try in order to fix any Spell Checker?

Description of the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility

You could also look to the MS Office forum for expert help.

Note that this group is for Windows XP help: there's a dedicated group for Office.

When you say "Errors Noted", is that noted by you or by Word?

Check that the language is correctly set and that No Proofing hasn't been checked. Open one of the documetns, use Ctrl+A to Select All and then use Tools, Options, Language, Set Language and check that your default language is selected and that the other boxes are unchecked.

Where to start. First thank you for your attention.

All machines are XP.

I installed 2000 last week so a restore wouldn't take out too much.

I corrected my laptop by putting the office97 disk in and reinstalling word97. Worked fine and 97 & spellcheck are as always including my personal.dics.

The spellchecker works fine on the laptop now. On the 2000 machine the spellchecker sorks but does not make any suggestions for a change. I'm going to try to reinstall 2000 on that machine to be sure it completes and see what happens. If not I'll restore.

The 2000 disk is an OEM disk for distruibtion with a new Compaq. Was a shrink wrapped "bargain" at 14.95. With Holo and Cert of Auth. Seemed to install fine albeit a bit slow.

Let's see what happens this time.
