Word 2000--linked graphics

I am trying to insert JPGs as linked files. I can insert them fine, but they will not automatically update, even though I have auto update selected in the Options.

In fact, when I go to Edit>Links, neither update option is selected, and both are greyed out. Help tells me that I can't change anything if the file is locked--it isn't.

Any ideas?

Basically, you need to take one of the following actions to update Word:

1. Print or Print Preview
2. Save/close/open
3. Ctrl-a (select all) then F9 (to update).

In other words, the automatic update is not, in fact, automatic?

Only when those "automatic update" actions occur.
