Word 2000 keeps locking document as "read only" 1

Word 2000 keeps saving my documents as "read only" - even when I am only using this document and others are closed. How do I disable the read only status?

There should be an option in Word under TOOLS, OPTIONS on the SAVE tab. READ ONLY RECOMMENDED.
uncheck this.

Read only is not checked to begin with. That is why I am so puzzled.

You might try deleting NORMAL.DOT from
C:\WINDOWS\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates
with Word closed
then restart word and then try again.
