At start-up, Word loads several templates. You could have a bad template that is having a problem loading. If this is the case, de-install Word and then delete the office dir. it was in. A de-install will not remove the templates you must do it by hand. Then re-install, you now have a true new copy installed.
Sorry- I forgot I had this thread- I Previously deleted a few templates that the user was not using one at a time until it fixed it and that did it. A corrupt Template... No need to reinstall Word.
For the record, a corrupted template did me in. In my case, CPU usage went to 100% on opening Word documents. After searching for all templates, I deleted normal.dot (and it's variants) as well as pdfmaker.dot and it's variants located in various Adobe folders. This did the trick for me.
