I have a small home network which consists of a Windows Vista Home, Pro and several XP computers. They all use a networked HP 4050 laserjet and a HP Photosmart 2610xi which are attached to my router. Today, I discovered on my Vista Pro machine that anytime I select the HP Photosmart it 'hangs'. I can print fine to the default 4050 printer and create an XPS document, however, if I click on the Photosmart I get the 'spinning wheel'.

I noticed a similar thread thread697-1436287 that dealt with a HP printer that was shared via the computer it was attached to but there was no resolution and the thread was closed. There was also an interesting thread on cnet on Word 07 crashing on exit which had some interesting suggestions including registry edits.

I'm at a loss to explain how this problem suddently occurred (there appears to have been no updates via Windows Update over night and I am very careful to maintain this computer carefully including shutting down each night and it has 4GB of RAM with an Athlon 64 processor).

I have run through many of the common resolutions including renaming normal.dotm, disabling all add-ins (winword /a) and ensuring the most current print driver (after removing and re-installing). The problem does not occur in other Office apps although I have noticed that the response time is very lagged when using the printer in Powerpoint and Excel.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds lika a driver conflict issue. Your Vista driver, and the XP driver are incompatible. Try using only the XP driver
and check the app is using a Postscript file, or PCL6.

Thanks for the suggestion, that does sound closer to what the problem is. I also discovered that I was connecting to the printer via one of the computers on the network, I created a TCP/IP port by selecting Add Printer-Local Printer and created a new TCP/IP port using the IP address that the printer was assigned. That cleared up the problem too.
