Hey everyone,
I'm re-learning PageMaker 7.0 (I last worked with 6.0 a couple years ago). In any case, I'm having a problem placing text. I have all my text for a training manual in one story, and I'm using master pages, etc. I go to place the text on each page, ending at the lower margin. But for some reason, when I try to place text at the bottom of the page at the lower margin, it won't let me! I either have to continue down PAST where the page ends, or take the text and place it on the next page, even though I have over half a page left on the previous page! What am I doing wrong?

Any and all help is appreciated!

Hi, Karlin,

Have you enabled autoflow?

Either check Layout -> autoflow with no file open, or hold down Ctrl when placing the text with the mouse.

Alternatively, double check the size of your bottom margin OR did you try drawing a text box first which ended well short of the bottom margin? Don't start with a text box, just click your cursor where you want the text to start and make sure Autoflow is on. Bear in mind that Autoflow actually stops at the bottom of the first page/column, but once you load up the cursor (by clicking on the red windowshade) and click where you want the text to continue in the next column/page, it will then autoflow into however many columns/pages it needs.

John,
Tried the autoflow (I had been turning it off and on trying to see if it would have an affect). Nothing. I did close all files and turn it on there.. still nothing. The Ctrl button didn't help either. Thanks for your suggestions though~

Eggles,
What do you mean the size of my bottom margin? How do you check that, and how would it make a difference? I haven't changed any defaults if that's what you mean. I didn't draw a text box when I started as far as I know. I already flowed out the story from the first page, and now it's just being cranky. I do have guides that I'm snapping to on the left and right of the page (depends on whether it's a right or left handed page).

I did add official columns instead of just page guides. I think it has something to do with the styles I created, because when I back up the text (it converts to the previous line style without a hard enter), then it seems to stay. How odd.

Sorry I didn't get back last week, left for the holiday. Thank you both for your suggestions.. any more? ;)

Go to File>Document Setup to check the size of your margins.

Re: I think it has something to do with the styles I created

With the text tool placed somewhere in the cranky paragraph, note its style in the style palette. Double click on the style and in the style options dialog box, click on the 'para' tab. See what the measurements are for paragraph spacing, particularly the 'space after'. I am just wondering if somehow a particularly large measurement appears here.

Re: I do have guides that I'm snapping to on the left and right of the page

If you have set up a page with margins (in document setup) and then created columns, there's no need to put in guides as well. The text will automatically snap to the margin guides of the columns and page.

This text you are trying to place - is it imported from Word? Maybe there is some strange Word style still attached.

Open a brand new PM document. Paste the text into it. Don't worry whether it goes to the bottom margin or not at this stage. Highlight all the text (Control A), and in the Style palette, click on [No Style]. Then copy the text again and place it into your original document and see if the text behaves itself now.
