System is AMD K6-2 500 Mhz
master Western Digital 2.5 G HD
Slave Drive, I forget what it is (Samsung ? 10 G).

This sytem worked fine for quite a while (months). Then got Primary Master and Slave Failure messages on boot. Thought it might be MB, so I replaced it with exact same model. Now, when the WD drive jumper is set on master, will not detect. This may have been going on before, I'm not sure. Jumper on Slave, will detect. No jumper (single drive), will detect. I need to get it to work as a master so I can get the second drive back on line. Any suggestions. I have tried moving it on the cable and replacing the jumper.

Can you set the jumpers to Cable select? I had a problem with some Compaqs where the HDD's would only be recognized when both drives were set to cable select. The master is then attached to the end of the ribbon cable, and the slave to the middle. It was wierd, and I still don't know why it was that way, but you might want to give it a go.

There was some drives that would not cooperate with competing brands. I have a drive that works as a Master/Single but won't work jumpered as a Slave.

And I'd go to and look up the drive, sometimes the jumper pins can be misinterpreted from the diagram on the label.

Can't you just swap the drives (make 10GB master). You can still make old master boot drive by changing boot sequence in bios (at least till you've sorted things out). It would seem likely that 2.5Gb drive is damaged it some way (was working for months - isn't now), so if it was mine, I'd be looking to replace/put what's on it (important) somewhere else.

Yeah, I agree with Wolluf.

You tried:
- No Jumper (single drive) -> successful

Go ahead and:
- Set Jumper to Master (single drive) -> is this successful?

If it works as the master by itself, then it's got to be the slave 10GB drive causing the problem. If it will only work as the slave, you can try what wolluf suggested and switch the boot order in the BIOS.
