wondering about the sendmail program

Hello all!

I am going to be writing a script (basically a formmail program) that uses the sendmail program from my webserver. What I cant find out is what I have to do to use the sendmail program. From what I understand, you open the program like a file and write to it and when you close it the email is sent.

I would much rather write my own script than use someone elses, as I am trying to learn perl.
