I got an email from this site. Here's what it says:
----------------
Someone has just begun to research your background via our website.

This email has been automatically sent to you so as to make you aware that your background is being looked into.

The popularity of our website is currently growing at a very rapid rate.

If another person begins to research you in the future we will again inform you via email.
----------------
After this, there is a link to a form to stop receiving future emails as well as a link to show the queries made on me. No specific details are available.

So any opinions on this site?? I see the uses of this kind of site, but I can also see significant potential for abuse.

Check it out for yourself.
You might want to try entering your email address in the search form also.

...and i'm SUUREEEE that the world of mouth consorsium would know my email, my name and my domain.

Yeah. Sure.

I would trash it, same as all the other stuff i get in my email workboxes. If people REALLY want to know stuff about you, it's not gonna be from a website that actually warns the person about it, trust me.

Nevermind, just used google. Stay away from this site.
It seems they operated in a slightly different manner before but this incarnation is worse and it's ripe for all kinds of abuse.

lullysing, I was just typing my post and saw yours once I submitted it. Apparently, this site just facilitates communciation between people--it doesn't actually host any data people submit. That's what it claimed to do before though.

This reeks of a scam much more, but their new system is much more devious--a forum to gossip. This new system seems to just be getting started (google turned up references to the old system mostly) so i expect we will hear about this much more.

After running abuse and dns-related mailboxes, let's just say that i go thru a lot of spam, not just a little, a HELLA lot of it. I've gotten good to the point of knowing what to delete only by sender and subject line, virii included.

It's just like that "microsoft patch" scam/virii people were getting a little earlier. Like microsoft knows the email address of every single user of their software...

Similar sites are Huminity and Friendster. Huminity seems to be harvesting emails (according to a recent Slashdot article), but Friendster looks to be set up correctly, as it's an opt-in system.

I too have been contacted by this word of mouth connections months back. I have turned them into the FTC with many other people that have realized it was a scam. I did not pay the $20 so that was good.

You can check out more on this scam at:
but don't be alarmed if you get your first notification; it's a crock for sure.
