.wmf files- pros/cons, when do I use them?

Hello,
Was recently thinking about .wmf files & how I have only used that format a few times when going from an earlier version of corel to an earlier version of AI. It stopped the issue of letters with knockouts being 'sliced open' into 2 sections.
What is the best use for this file type? What are its strong points and weaknesses?
