Hi

We are attempting to create an applet that will allow our engineers to quickly/easily make observations in the field of problems noted during an inspection. We're TRYING to use the win mobile version of Excel, but are starting to instead think of learning Visual Studio enough to create the front end using that.

1: could somebody tell me if win mobile 6.1 has an event viewer?

2: we've some concern that Visual Basic/Studio might be ... not the best platform to develop our entry screens/pull down menus on ( too old? ). The back end will be either the File Maker we currently use or perhaps a version of SQL, however the front end is what we are concentrating on now.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Paul

Maybe, another option to consider is a web app?

Nothing on the devices, easier to develop and test, and less platform specific if you later change devices.

But that might be an issue if the users need access when out of radio range... depending on how the connections are where the engineers are likely to be

As to your questions:

1. No. But have a look at -

2. If you want a local app, see -
VS 2005 or 2008 would be fine for the .Net Compact Framework
I think there are also tools allowing you to use Java

Thanks Mike. I can't wait to see the face of the fellow who is going to learn whatever languages are needed to complete this project <bg>

If not using my idea for a web app... might be an idea to outsource it?

Mobile device development is a kinda speciality. We have an app that runs on Blackberry, Windows Mobile and (end of this month) iPhone/iTouch. The developers are not interchangeable and use very different tools.
