The color code is not so much the issue. The pinouts are what you should be concerned with. On an 8 pin connector the Legend uses pins 3,4,5,6 for "regular" phones and pins 1,2,3,4,5,6 for the attendant console. The 568A standard replaces pins 3 and 6 with the orange pair instead of green. Hope that could be of help.
All MLX sets require pairs 1 and 3 (pins 4+5 and 3+6)
The MLX sets That require Extra power (MLX 20L sets or MLX 28D sets with 1 dss attached) use the Brown pair for power (pins 7+8) NOT the Orange Pair (pins 1+2) an stated above. If you use 2 DSS's there needs to be an auxuillary power supply that gives more juice to the 4th pair It is usually hooked up using an adapter at the phone but if you are daring and crafty Like me I Don't hook up the 4th pair to the system, But hook up the power supply to the 4th pair instead at the phone room so it doesn't clutter up the desk.
ATL sets require pairs 1,2 and 3 (pins 4+5 1+2 and 3+6)
If you use Off hook call announce (rarely used) the 4th pair (pins 7+8)at the jack are hooked to the adjacent ports First pair (pins 4+5) and it is used as the second talk path, there is also programming that has to go along with it <---one phone 2 ports
The Magix 4400 series sets use the first pair (pins 1+2) Except the 4424LD+ with the electo-flourescent display. It uses the 3rd pair (pins 3+6) for power but I hook up pair 1 to the system and hook the power up in the closet using cross-connect to avoid the power supply and adapter at the desk that the phone is at.
