Greetings Gentlemen,

This is a little off IP Office, but I know some of you do wiring. I am looking for an average of what a Cat-6 Plenum cable run costs in the US ( New Jersey/New York area).

Thanks/Quaz

that would depend on lots of factors, you are in the wrong place for your answer

Cat 6 will run you $150-$200 for 1000ft, plus tools to terminate copper cables.

like Joe said, it would be impossible to give you a number, there are many different factors (length of run, ceiling type, wall type, ceiling height). My company never even gives a per cable cost when it comes to just a few cables, it really only used on projects of 100 or more cables. if its just one or two cables it could be anywhere from $150-$400 depending on the circumstances.

As everyone already noted there are a lot of variables, but
In a drop ceiling and sheetrock wall environment in the NY metro area you can vaguely expect to pay $250-300 per dual run (a voice and data to each location) if you're doing a whole office and not a few additional runs. Individual runs are typically time and material.
If it isn't sheetrock walls and a drop ceiling throw any pricing estimate out the window.

There are other non-cable related factors too.
In NJ you'll likely need a permit and the contractor is obligated to remove the old existing cabling above the ceiling. There is a fee for the permit, each municipality wastes a different amount of the contractor's time in both getting the permit and getting the inspection. Expect to see that reflected in your price.
In Manhattan everything is more expensive. In a union only building in Manhattan you'll pay a minimum of twice as much but usually not more than four times as much as non-union cable job.

There are soft costs too. Using the same vendor to cable and to install your IP Office has its advantages and can save you time and grief in the long run.

Also be skeptical of substantially cheap cable prices-- a 450 foot data run isn't inexpensive at any price.

450 feet would be out of spec, so now a satellite closet will be needed with most likely fiber as the back bone to the mdf so things could add up very quickly, as far as NYC. We did an install there years ago and the contractor told me if I lifted a finger they would break my legs, man those union jobs are tough!

450 feethe is only out of spec for ether net. Perfectly acceptable for ds phones or analogue

Matt
I have always wished that my computer would be as easy to use as my telephone.
My wish has come true. I no longer know how to use my telephone.

ya but he is running cat 6 so I doubt he will run that for voice only

Plenum is double the cost of riser cable. And in NYC you have to run cable, even plenum, through EMT conduit.

Thanks, Guys, for your answers. I thought the same thing Gknight1 when he said 450 feet. Joe2938, I live outside of Philadelphia in Jersey and I have experienced the Union Boys in Philadelphia. In a Union building, I was not allowed to touch anything but my equipment that was to be installed.

I'm bidding on a job that calls for 115 Cat-6 drops. I have installed a gazllion miles of Cat-5e, I have never had a call for Cat-6. I am at a loss for a per run charge.

Thanks/Quaz

Why don't you call your DC and ask them to quote you a run?

LOL, I come from a DC background, so it's hard to remember that many IPO's are in house.

our cat6 quotes are generally 20% higher than a cat5e quote to give you an idea of the difference.
