I am trying to use a fax line in a shared situation involving an elevator emergency phone.
I have the dial tone connecting to pins 4 and 5 (red and green). Now when I plug in the RJ45 to the jack, I cannot get dial tone on the brown grey pair but when I disconnect the RJ45 I can get dial tone in the brown grey terminals.
Needs some help!!!!!!

This is because the alarm system (which doesn't exist here) completes the circuit. No alarm, no dial tone on those terminals unless nothing is plugged in. When nothing is plugged in, the shorting bars on the RJ31X complete the circuit to the brown/grey pair.

Easy way to skin this cat is to go to vikingelectronics.com They will have a line sharing device that should be perfect. Look at the LSD-2. It looks like it does exactly what you need, no muss/no fuss. ~ Mike

Hi meyer1y2k
Just checked out the Viking website. I think you are right this is exactly what I am looking for, thanks for the tip.

I think you should check the building code in your area to be sure this is legal.
