I am running wireshark on my machine and when its capturing packets it only captures what I am surfing not what is going on in the LAN. Does anybody know what I am doing wrong?? I want to capture (sniff) the LAN not just what happens in my machine...

you either need to set up a monitoring port on a switch so that all the traffic is copied to that port (which your PC is connected to) or plug your PC into a "dumb" hub which should broadcast all the traffic

as Norm indicates, you are capturing all the data that your network card can see, you are likely networked via a switch which means that only data directed to you arrives at your PC.

To capture all the traffic on a switch you need to mirror to one port and capture promiscuously.
