I have read much talk on here about the fact that MLX phones can live off of 2 pairs, and if they need extra power, they needed 3 pairs. If this is the case, why did Avaya put an 8 conducter jack on the bottom of the phone, and encourage people to use big, thick, and ugly 8 wire cords, when they could have just put a 6 wire plug on the bottom, and used 6 wire plugs?? Does the green pair do anything at all??

Thanks,

Austin

Because the older merlin sets which everyone upgraded from, had the 8 conductor cables on them

?????

Well, actually the green pair IS one of the active pairs, assuming that you're using AT&T's 568-B wiring scheme that was developed for the Merlins. Furball's got it right, that they wanted a "structured" wiring system to be installed, so no matter what type of "voice terminal" was being used, the wire and jack would support it.

The most important thing to remember when dealing with Merlin Legend and Magix equipment, is never ask "WHY?"! Just accept that it "IS", and figure out how to make it work. Anything else will drive you nuts!

Oh! Ok!

Is it the Orange pair that is useless? I am asking because I have heard somewhere that it was used for grounding, is this true???? When one reads the manuals, Avaya almost makes it sound as though all 4 pairs are vital, why? (OOPS, I didn't mean that!!)

Thanks for dealing with my little questions!

Austin

Yes, it is the Orange pair that is unused on the MLX sets. It is not grounded or anything. So, it you need to "steal" a pair at a jack for a single line device like a modem or cordless, that is the pair to take. It you need another pair, and you are not using a DSS or MFM, then you can also take the Brown pair.

Now, if you're dealing with an ATL phone, without off hook voice announce, it is the Brown pair that is not used and available. Thankfully, the ATL sets should be "sunsetting" soon.

Well, - For years we in Tier 3 just point blank said, "You gotta' have all 4".

But alas, RULE NUMBER 1 - "They all lie" was at work.

You can run an MLX phone on 2 pairs, UNLESS you need to run a DSS or an MFM or a PASSAGEWAY.

Now, which 2 do you use?

Leaving the PORT you have all 4, Blue, Orangem, Green & Brown.

SO, if you terminate all of them on a 66 block, then run 2 pair (Blu & Or) to the set, then you cross connect BLU & OR from the SET to BLU & GRN on the 66 Block going to the port.

If you run ALL 4 to the Set, you can connect them straight thru.

I hope this helps.

WAIT ! - WAIT ! - WAIT !

I am backwards here !

If you have 4 Pair to the SET, terminated on a 66 Block, then you hook 2 Pair from the PORT (Blu & Or) to BLUE & GREEN going to the set.

IF you have 2 Pair from the set use 2 Pair from the port - BLU & OR in both places.

Sorry for the mis-speak.....

if you ar looking a a RJ-45 plug, what are the pins tha need to be connected for only 2 pairs.

Assume you are looking at the plug with the tab on the bottom amd it is pointed towards a socket

pins 3, 4, 5, and 6 need to be connected. You can use a plain old 4 wire line cord, and it should work just fine
