Thanks for the reply bcastner. I'm afraid I don't understand your advice - what is "Ad Hoc" mode exactly?
Looking at my OP , I notice that I didn't mention that I want to network the two machines wirelessly although this is mentioned in the heading - perhaps that was confusing.
I suppose I need an "Access Point" - is this another black box ? Does this then plug into the external DSL modem ?
As you can see I'm completely new to all this stuff .
Two (actually up to about 14) wireless devices can interact without an Access Point.
In the driver software for you network adapter you should see a choice, likely now set to "Infrastructure". Change this to Ad Hoc, and the devices can communicate.
For the machine having the interenet connection now, you would use ICS to enable Internet Sharing.
On reading the AD Hoc ref URL I notice that this will not work with W2K so , as my laptop has W2K , this Ad Hoc route will not apply here.
I presume , therefore , in order to wirelessly connect my XP Pro Desktop to the W2K Laptop , I will need an Access Point plus , presumably , two wireless cards , one for each machine .
Is this a correct assumption ?
Forgive these basic questions , but is an "Access Point" another black box and does this plug into the external modem ( this is an ZyXEL Prestige 600 incidentally )
Perhaps I should really begin a new thread with this reply as I have decided not to use the Ad Hoc method now but the Infrastructure Mode instead after hearing some other opinions . However , as the problem is essentially the same , I'll continue this thread.
I have a desktop with XP Pro SP2 and a laptop with W2K SP4 .
The desktop is connected to the Web using an external ADSL broadband modem ( a ZyXEL Prestige R231-T1 )
I want to be able to connect the laptop wirelessly to the desktop.
To enable the desired wireless broadband hookup I've just bought a Linksys Wireless-G 2.4 GHz router ( model No: WRT 54GS ) a Wireless-G PCI Adapter card ( Model No: WMP54GS ) which is installed in the desktop and a Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter Card ( model No: WPC54GS ) which is inserted in the laptop.
I have now got the router setup and linked to the external DSL modem so that I am able to connect to the Web as before with the sole difference now that the Web connection is now through both the ADSL modem and the router . The router is connected to the desktop through one of its ports to an Ethernet card in the desktop by means of the supplied cable.
I have installed the software for the desktop PCI Adapter card and also for the laptop Notebook Adapter Card and there is an icon in the Sys Tray in the laptop which , when clicked , gives an indication of a good signal .
I cannot , however , get the laptop to access the web through this wireless connection between the desktop and the laptop !!
Can anyone tell me what I have failed to do here , please ?
Since my last post on this subject , I have now successfully linked the laptop wirelessly to the desktop and am able to access the web on the laptop through the wireless link from the router so long as the desktop is itself connected to the Web.
The router gets its Web access from an external DSL modem.
The laptop is named "ltop1" and the desktop is named "DTOP" , both being members of a workgroup named "WORKGROUP"
The desktop , laptop , router and DSL modem all have separate IP addresses and can all PING each other.
What I want to do now is network both machines so that I can share files and the printer which is attached to the desktop.
What steps do I need to take to effect this , please ?
