I have a few machines running USB wireless network devices that report they can not find the domain controller when a new user attempts to login to the machine after booting.

If a user has previously logged onto the machine it will authenticate them using cached credentials then start the NIC after login. If this user logs off and then the new user attempts to login it will authenticate them.

I hate USB network adapters, and I really hate USB Wireless network adapters. First question I have is, do you have to use these?

Aside from that, for the desktops that do login with cached credentials... What kind of signal do they get? Can you ping anything? Can you get on the web? If you move the computer right next to your WAP/Router, do you get consistency logging in?

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Yes, USB Wireless is not good but customer bought low form factor PCs and a wireless PCI card won't fit.
Problem is that the USB NIC does not start till you log into Windows then it scans for a WAP. Yes it will be OK with cached a/cs but new users can't log in unless a cached user logs in first!!
I was wondering if the the USB/networking could be started before windows logs in.

What brand/model adapter are they? Have you called the manufacturer for technical support? They may have a workaround.

It a netgear WPN111. Been on website - no mention in support knowledgebase. I'm going to try removing the driver and let Windows XP install it's own.

Thanks,

John
