I just purchased a D-Link AirPlus ExtremeG 108mbps Wireless Router DI-624 wireless router and need to PCMIA wireless card and found one I like which is an 3Com® 11a/b/g Wireless PC Card with XJACK® Antenna.

They both have a turbo or extreme modes of 108mbps and 104mbps!

I was wonder if the D-Link wireless router could work with the 3COM card in the extreme mode of 104-108mbps together!

shown in this link:

Does anyone know?

D-Link claims it will work fine as long as the router is revision b or c. Typically though the turbo modes do not work between manufacturers. My personal opinion is stick with the same manufacturer and you'll see better performance so if it all possible try to stay with an entirely D-Link setup.

Hi ImpetusEra,

Thanks for the info. I like to but they PCMCIA card only comes in a silver tip antenna case in the U.S. and my notebook is black. The b wireless card is black. I was hoping to find a black version; but it is only available in Australia and my guess the far east. I just thought that 108mbps would be universal I get not properietory.

I don't know why they always do differing color based on geographic locations. Make no marketing sense from a consumer view point; but I found alot of items that I wanted in another color and it only available in some other part of the world and I have to pay the high expense of shipping to get it!

I will try to get the Australia version on the internet. Shipping is going to be costly however!

Might just get the 3COM because it has the a/b/g and is retractable!

Black nail polish.

On a serious note: the "Turbo" 108 mode is proprietary, requires the Atheros chipset and not the Broadcom chipset typicly used by 3Com, and the introduction of a non-D-Link adapter can drop all clients to a more 802.11g compliant mode setting, of the four that the D-Link router offers.

Purchase a D-Link adapter and paint it.

Found link on review of 3Com CardBus and states:

Supports speeds up to 54 Mbps on 802.11g or 802.11a networks—nearly five times the speed of existing 802.11b networks. In turbo mode, supported 11a and 11g network speeds jump to 104 Mbps when used with 3Com Wireless LAN Access Point 8500 or Access Point 8700.
This is hilarious to be honest. Sure you can get those speeds theoretically and XP likes to say that you are connected at that speed, but efficiency is not there. Wired you get approximately 80% efficiency. Wireless it is remarkable to get 50%. However, that 104 should really be 108 theoretical, and whatever they say, the 11a turbo will work with any other Atheros chip with 11a turbo.

Now I going to see if it has the 11a turbo with Atheros Chip in it - D-Link!

Can anyone comment on this? Because I don't know it true or not!
