for PDA's is very good software is it this???

Stand up wherever you are, go to the nearest window and yell as loud as you can, 'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore.'

i'm not sure that you need any software aside from that provided by the mfg of the installed card. i say this because when i want to find networks, i start the software main program, and scan for networks. anything in range shows up.

Thanks netsumbler was what I was after....

Jockser, all the mfg software tells you is any that are being broadcast. Netstumbler show any network broadcasting or not....

Are you sure that Netstumbler shows any network regardless of whether it is broadcasting or not? As I understand it, the SSID isn't actually broadcasted per say, rather it is sent as a response to a WiFi card scanning (broadcasting a "hello, anyone out there" signal). If you disable the "SSID broadcast" on your AP, then it simply doesn't respond to scan attempts and you must know the SSID in order to associate. If that is the case, I'm not sure how Netstumbler could locate a "non-broadcasting" network.

I'll have to grab a laptop from work tonight and test it at home. I'm thinking that unless the laptop has been previously configured with the SSID then it won't show up.

Using netstumbler at home, on my works laptop, and configured for the network at work, not my home network, I can see 2 AP's, mine with a hidden SSID, and another one.

Therefore netstumbler can see AP's which have SSID broadcast switched off.
