Have XP SP-2 Home network. Connections via wireless router. Use AVG and ZoneAlarm. In Network Connections I disable LAN and enable Wireless and have poor results. Copies from other network machines is slow, constant internet page time outs, etc.
If I enable LAN and disable wireless the problems go away.
I have run Windows Defender (no problems found) and AVG Anti-Spyware (3 worrysome problems detected and removed). AVG Scan found no errors.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Jim..

by design wireless is slower than cat5 connected

Depends what you mean by slow - but signal strength and quality are big factors.

I was able to speed up my connection thru a dedicated line from my cable co. to my PC. My PC connection was at the end of the cable (after splitting off 3 times for TV and/or PC's. As stduc said, signal strength is a big factor. Your cable co. should be able to tell you what your strength & speed is. It doesn't sound like a bug but if you want to check deeper, Grisoft also has a very good Anti-Rootkit available at

You might want to try downloading & running that app. Sysinternals and Sophos also offer free Anti-Rootkits. Also, download Process Explorer from:

It's much better than Windows Task manager as it gives more details as to what's running & what resources it's using and handy in ferreting out bugs too.

Hope this helps!

Have you checked to see if there are any driver updates for your wireless cards etc? There may be a firmware update for any router too.

one of the drawbacks to cable internet is that many people on your "circuit" share the same bandwidth and signal.

for instance, if you are in a development with everyone on cable using the internet to download streaming content then the whole "circuit" will bog down.

Sirblack, Star for you as I did not know avg made an anti rootkit program. Will be good to add to my collection. Thanks!
