I have a Belkin F5d72330 wireless router and have a static IP address from my ISP. I am trying to setup a website. The Belkin router allows me to open port 80. However, I don't seem to be able to forward that to my internal IP address (to my server that has the website page). Instead, now when I go to my website, it takes me to the web application for my router. It appears that I need to forward the traffic from the external address to the internal, but I don't seem to be able to get that to work.

This was all I could find on their KB,

Resolution
Virtual Server, also referred to as Port forwarding or port mapping can be setup with the router.

The setup of the virtual server depends on what you want to setup.

Virtual server is used to allow computers not on your internal network or computers on the internet to access a resource or service on the internal network.

For example:

Say you have an FTP on your internal network that you want people on the internet to access. To set that up go to the virtual server screen on the router and specify the IP address of the computer on the internal network that has the FTP server on it. The private port that you want to specify would be 21 because port 21 is FTP. The public port could be any number you want it to be, for ease of explanation lets just say it is also 21, that is the port the public would use to access the machine. For a computer on the internet to access the FTP server on the internal machine they would open up a web browser and type FTP://(WAN IP ADDRESS, found on main status page of router screen):21.

A better example would be FTP://1.1.1.1:21

They could also use an FTP access program and use the WAN IP address then in the program would specify the public port.

You could have more than one FTP server at a time running through the router if you like. They would each of course have their own IP address that you would specify in the Virtual Server setting screen, the Private port would be the same, 21 for FTP but the public ports would have to be different so that the public, people on the internet, could distinguish between the two servers.

See if your router supports this option...

Thanks,

Matt - you seem to be 100% on track with my situation. AND the router does support virtual servers. Unfortunately, I tried this. When I go to Virtual servers, it lets me select the type of traffic (port 80) and specify the internal IP address where I want this to go to. But it doesn't get there. Instead, it defaults to the web interface for the router. I had emailed the vendor because it seems goofy that when I put the entry in for the virtual server and apply the changes, if I then log out of the router and then back in, I can never see where it had been entered. But naturally, I haven't heard anything from them.

So any help you can provide is certainly appreciated. THANKS again!

Have you tried upgrading your firmware? I would call Belkin and wait on hold till you get through...

I once waited on hold for over 3 hours [not for Belkin], welcome to my world... [smile]

Thanks,

I updated my firmware yesterday - still no luck. Did you say CALL??? AAAUUUUGHHHH

Suppose you're right though.

THANKS again.

Most routers allow you to switch off the web admin system for external (WAN) connections. This may be your best option.

Besides, do you really want anyone on the internet to be able to control your router? (OK, they still a password, but logons for routers aren't generally complex enough to be considered secure).

<marc> i wonder what will happen if i press this...[ul][li]please tell us if our suggestion has helped[/li][li]need some help? faq581-3339[/li][/ul]

Only because you insisted ;-) I broke down and called tech support. Their diagnosis: a bad router!

But on the bright side, they are shipping out a replacement. Supposedly, it'll be here in 4-5 business days. I'll let you know if it then works.

THANKS!
