Hello,

I am building a linux server that will also be running DHCP and DNS services. I'm wondering if I can simply stick a wireless access pci NIC card in it (e.g. linksys wmp11) and have the box act as a wireless access point?

Any thoughts would be appreciated thanks!

its sounds like it would to me. however you would have more restrictions than a normal AP unit.

Restrictions meaning functionality in the typical WAP router box? (DHCP/DNS/NAT) Or in the transmission of data? Should I set up the card in "ad hoc" mode?

Thanks!

restrictions as in coverage of data transmission. I only say that because that's not what the card was made for. It may work just as good but I wouldn't think so. Also, being that the location of the "homeade AP" would be floor level there would be alot more transmission interferring factors. are you thinking of utilizing this for the workplace?

Ah...good point on the coverage. It will be used in the workplace, although within a 25ft one level radius. Alternatively are you aware of any wireless products that might fit the bill...in other words, a PCI card that acts as an access point? Thanks again for your response.

Well my thought would be to buy something that you could change out the antenna on. Such as the SmartBridges AirPoint. It is designed with the ability to use a larger antenna, you can't up that version of it's output above 20mW, unless you upgrade to the outdoor version, but you wouldn't even come close to needing that if everything is within a 25ft radius.
