Okay my plan is network two building that about a block or so apart from each other. What type of wireless networking equipment should i look in to and or stay away from. Now these two buildings are in the line of site of each other. Thank you

Any point to point wireless system should work well if you've got line of site. We use mostly microwave systems, but that requires licensing, so I would go with something in the public frequency spectrum that's legal without acquiring any special licensing.

When you say a block, how many feet (aprox) is it away? Do you have line of site?

I would say its prolly about 500ft max. what would be some good products for this then

A couple of Linksys access points worked for us but you may want to go with a more robust solution.

What you would want is a Parabolic Dish or Directional Antenna on the roofs of each building. These are great for point to point applications. The band is very narrow which is great for security...i.e. wardrivers

There are a couple of manufacturers...Yagi comes to mind. Im sure Cisco/Linksys makes something...

In the future everything will work...

only if you're not dealing with sensitive information if you decided to go wireless as your permanent link between sites which in most cases, not recommended.....

#1 - not reliable
#2 - not secure
#3 - to archieve #1 & #2 would cost more in terms of both equipment and maintainence....might as well get a data circuit from your telco

IMO......

When looking at open protocol wireless solutions (802.11X), GREGTHESUPERTECH’s posting is somewhat correct. But, you can get more secure wireless connections for point to point.
Look into the Motorola Canopy radio. They make a point to point back haul radio that is totally integrated into one out door package. The unit is powered over the Ethernet cable via a supplied adaptor (we use out-door rated CAT-5e cable). The back haul radios are available in 10 Mbit and 20 Mbit full duplex models, and can be much cheaper than leased T1 circuits.

We have been using these radios for point to point inter-office networking for a while now, and they work great.

FYI, they also make a point to multi-point model, available at a lower data rate.

Unless you have very sensitive data, there is little problem with todays wireless products. Enabling one or more types of security on the link as well as one or more types of security measures on the LAN side of the connection will give you plenty of protection. Also simple things like directional antennas and only the necessary power level to complete communications are some ways of keeping people from messing with you.

Almost any of the manufacturers of wireless products should be fine for this limited hop. I would have no problem investing $800 in wireless gear, antennas and setup for 11 or 54mbs channels. That will be much cheaper in the long haul than setup and leasing a 1.5mb channel from the telco.

Good Luck!

It is only my opinion, based on my experience and education...I am always willing to learn, educate me!

Proxim makes some MW equip that works great. On the high end you get a 100 MB data connection, and 2 full T-1's. They have to be in line of sight, and are goot up to about 14 miles. Pricy though.

If you are concerned about security over 802.11b you can always use a VPN with it.
