I am currently with a friend in new jersey and he got wireless networking and i tried to connect to his unsecured network and I got wireless network connected to his id and when i open internet page it throws page not found. upon troubleshooting i found the following:

his modem is in basement and earlier till i was there he was having wireless access but when i entered since i didnt get it he took my laptop to basement and connected directly using ethernet cable and i was able to browse internet but his laptop lost the opportunity. his system is showing wireless connected but ie is throwing page not found.
he was able to connect @ basement directly to the modem but when he came upstairs and hooked it thru ethernet or wireless couldnt connect so far.
Please advise me on how to fix the problem. the above info is the cut and paste of troubleshooting using ibm vantage connections on my laptop.
