I've finally gotten rid of my 20 metre RJ45 cable and replaced my network with a couple of wireless devices. On my laptop I have a D-Link Air DWL-610 PCMCIA card and on my PC I have a Netgear MA111 USB dooberrywotsit. It took me a while to sus it all out but I finally got them talking to each other. I can now use my laptop wherever I want around the house and in the garden to connect to the internet.
However... there's always an "however"... when it comes to file sharing the whole thing grinds to a halt. My previous hardwired network had no file sharing problems and access was pretty much instantaneous. Now when I click on my network places I get the little torch "search" icon for anything upto a minute before the other PC's drives/folders show up. Then when I attempt to open a folder it continues in snail mode until I eventually give up and use a CD-RW disc to transfer even the smallest of files between the two computers. Now it could be I've missed something glaringly obvious but I don't see what. The siganl strength is always good to excellent on both units, TX rates are set to 11Mbps, internet downloads through the ICS on the main PC to the laptop are more than respectable. So what's the problem..?
BTW... PC is an AMD 2000XP running XP Pro and laptop is an AMD 2500XP running XP Home. Windows network management has been disabled in favour of the D-Link and Netgear management utilities on each machine...
