I am not sure if this is the correct forum, but I have a laptop running WIN XP, and a netgear router, the computer finds the network and connect no prblem.

However when I try to connect another computer (say a friends laptop) with Vista, the laptop can see the network but will not connect, it does not even ask for a password. Yet this laptop connects to the network at his own home.

Can anyone help?

Thanks

Simple stuff first.
Having a connection is only the first step to joining a network.

Does windows prompt you to join the new network?
Have you run the network connection Wizard?

This will set it up with a new connection to the second network.

Have you entered the correct security information. (WEP etc) Key.
Not quite the same thing as a password.

Open Network connections on your existing machine and right click then select properties of the wireless connection.
The Laptop should have a second connection Icon for your network with a similar list of protocols etc.

You need to know what type of wireless security the network is using: WEP, WEP-TKIP, WPA, WPA-AES, WPA-TKIP, WPA-2, etc.

WEP requires lengthy HEX keys that are quite irritating to enter. WEP is also less secure than the others. WPA is more secure and uses passphrases instead of long keys. Since it's not prompting you for a passphrase, you might have to manually setup the wireless network connection on the laptop first by going into the properties of it.

1) is the other computer using DHCP or a Static IP?

2) are they in the same WorkGroup? (on some routers this does not matter for Internet connectivity, just for the Network)...

3) check your Router for MAC filtering, which when enabled will not allow any other PC to connect that does not have the correct MAC...
