I am having trouble getting my wireless network set up in my house. I have an AMD Athalon processor with CPU speed 900 MHz and 200 MB of RAM. My wireless router works fine, I have another computer hooked up to it with cables. I am running windows 98 and I have everything installed correctly. The computer is reading the card and the card is picking up the signal from the wireless router and the computer says that all the hardware is working fine. The only problem is that I can't get on the internet. When I go to the DOS screen and type "ipconfig/renew_all", it will pick up the IP Addressa and the Subnet Mask, but it won't read anything for the Default Gateway.

I'm using a D-Link wireless router and a LinkSys adapter card for my wireless connection so I am pretty sure its not a compatibility issue. I'm sure there is something stupid I am not doing, anybody have any suggestions?

Are you able to ping the router?
Have you tried pinging the outside world?
Can you ping your other networked PC?

Be certain there are no WEP issues, if you fail authentication you can well return an IP from the DHCP server but effectively be denied access.

Have you thought about using a static IP assignemnt? You would pick a suitable IP in the address range of the router, say 192.168.1.2, subnet 255.255.255.0, Gateway the IP of the router.

I was not able to ping the outside world by typing ping yahoo.com or whatever website from the DOS screen. If you would be so kind as to tell me how to ping the router and the other computer, I will do that.

I am not sure what you mean by no WEP issues because I don't know what that is. It sounds like you might be on the right track, so maybe you could tell me how to check for failed authentification and I will do that. I will also try using a static IP assignment instead of automatically getting an IP address. Thanks for your help.

When you ping the router you obtain the IP address of your router and instead of using yahoo.com you would use that address.

Example: ping 192.168.0.1 (that's my router's ip address)

The same thing goes for the other computer just obtain the other computers IP address by typing IPCONFIG at the command prompt (win2k, WinXP, WinNT only) of the other computer and it will display the IP address then you can go back to the PC you are having problems with and attempt to ping that PC.

Example: ping 192.168.0.4 (that's one of my other PC's on the network)
