I'm experiencing some difficulties with a site consisting of 5 pc's and 4 wireless PDAs runnin PocketPC 2003 (casio it10's). The PDA's are communicating via 3 Linksys WAP54g access points. The handhelds and PCS are running software that communicates via TCP/IP.
The access points are on channels 1, 6 and 10. Problems arise as the handhelds are moved from one zone to the next. The site unfortunately has some thick walls and some inlets of rooms. The access points are positioned to provide as good coverage as posible for these areas. While walking the site at all times I have coverage from the access points however they obviously loose connection while changing from one access point to another. While going through these zones the software looses connection, exiting the software i can see that my PDA is on the network, returning to the software the system operates smoothly again.
Can anyone shed any light on what might cause the problem, are there any programs that will detect interference on channels (pings display no packet loss) , will other external wireless networks broadcasting on same channel as my handhelds affect my communications, would you recommend one access point and multiple repeaters throughout the site?

It sounds like you are saying that a user will be connected to an access point, runned some programs, but when they get to another access point the program will lose connection until they restart it.

That is usual, when moving to one access point to another the PDA will have to disconnect from one and log on to another most likly getting another ip address, and connect to a different AP. Therefore the dataflow has changed making the software not respond for its looking for the flow as it had started up.

Example
I will have my laptop connect wired to my access point with IE running and when I disconect I will need to restart all my internet using programs even though the wireless was running the whole time.

Best practice is to have one access point with repeaters, The repeaters only "repeat" the data flow boosting the signal.

Or something I would try if you access points is to assign the IP address of each PDA. maybe that would help.

Thank you for your help.

The PDA's have a static IP address programmed. The problem arises while in the software and going between different zones. To clear netowrk errors in the software it is necessary to exit it and restart it again. This resolves the problem.

Do you think that interference could have any bearing on this behaviour? Or is this definately symptoms of a roaming environment? i've been informed by "Symbol" experts that there technology never disconnects while roaming unlike other manufacturers.

Do repeaters have to be wired into my netowrk, or when programmed to boost the signal can they just be plugged in wherever there is a power socket with no necessity for wired network connection?

I don't think its interference. When you traval from one AP to another the program needs to restart to learn the new routing information.

Go with the repeaters. For all they do is take the wireless data, boost the signal and retransmitt, Here is an example of one

They do not have to be wired into the network, just pluged in somewhere.
