Wireless mouse/keyboard install does not hold

Hi
I've just recently replaced my wireless mouse and keyboard as I'd worn to many of the letters off the old one!

The new one works fine, but does not hold the install between power downs. This means that when I turn the machine on each day, the wireless dongle is unrecognised and therefore the mouse and keyboard don't work. As I have a password on my user, this is irritating in the extreme as I have to get an old keyboard mouse out, power up using that, and then insert the dongle again, whereupon everything is fine.

The keyboard/mouse came with no install disks.

Any ideas?

Marc

What brand wireless keyboard and mouse?

Are you using a USB hub to plug in the dongle? If not, have you tried a different USB port on the PC?

Some USB devices, when they lose power, will reset or not power on at next boot, I have a USB mouse that does exactly that...

also certain mainboards power-down USB ports, right before they shut off completely...

now as to your boot problem, have you tried the following: power on the PC, if the USB dongle does not get recognized and does not work in the LogIn screen, unplug it, wait a second and then reinsert it, to see if it catches then?

How to ask a question, when posting them to a professional forum.
Only ask questions with yes/no answers if you want "yes" or "no"

What is the computer model number, or motherboard model, there may be settings in the bios to better support the USB devices between power cycles. Usually something like, USB keyboard support enable/disable, or legacy USB. This may not be an OS issue, but a settings issue on the system board.

The make was Technika and it was bought from Tesco. Bearing in mind the fact that it was brand new and a make I hadn't heard of, I took it back and swapped it for a Microsoft one which was the same price. They didn't have it in stock so I'm waiting until tomorrow to find out if the new make/model has bypassed the problem.

For what it's worth, I have never had good luck with wireless keyboards for long and only really cheap wireless mice (mouses?) bought at Big Lots (have a lot of them) seem to go the distance. I have a drawer full of Logitech attempts.
Once you have your mouse / keyboard and it sputters, try moving the wireless dongle to another USB slot before you do anything else. It nearly always works on cheap mice. I've given up on the noble stuff. Odd.

Do you happen to be using Avast anti-virus? Because Avast defaults to "Install in sandbox" when making such changes, which means that no permanent changes are made to the system.

Chris.
