Wireless limited connectivity

I have a Netgear wireless router which works fine with no encryption and connects to my Vista laptop and I can view the internet.

However, I have tried every encryption security type available on the router and tried to connect to the laptop but it will not do so properly. It shows high signal strength and says it is connected but only with "limited connectivity" and will not connect to the internet. I have also tried setting up the connections manually on the laptop, with various security and encryption types but again, no luck.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Many thanks.

I haven't got a Vista machine here with wireless, but try this:-

Right click on the network icon in the System tray, and select Network and Sharing Centre. Left hand side near the top click on Manage Network Connections. Hopefully you'll see your current unencrypted wireless connection. Delete or remove it. Now close down and turn off your laptop. Reconfigure the router with your desired encryption, and start up the laptop. Click on the network icon and select the relevant wireless network. Type in the security key, and see if it connects.

Thanks. I have tried your suggestion but no luck. However, I found a suggestion that disabling TCP/IPv6 in the Connection Properties might help so I will try that today.

A few other thoughts...

I'm sure this won't make any difference, but try changing the wireless channel on the router.

I seem to recall that some older Netgear routers were not compatible with Vista. Whether or not this was just in respect of a secure connection, I regret I can't remember.

Any firmware updates available for your version of Netgear router?

The only other thing that comes to mind is that some Netgear equipment required details of the connecting computer to be put in the router configuration. Might've been computer name, wireless device MAC Address, can't remember what or where now. Doesn't exactly explain why it'll work without ANY security though...
