I am using Yahoo DSL and I have their Wireless router configured. I have two desktops (XP Prof), one wired and one wireless working without any issue. The problem I have is with my laptop (XP Prof). The LAN setup and TCP/IP properties are all setup for Automatic IP configuration.

When I do ipconfig /release, it says "already released" and for renew, it takes a long time and errors out saying unable to connect to DHCP server.

How could I make the Laptop connect to the network?

The router should have its DHCP enabled. It should also be able to allocate the required number of IP addresses, that is, it is not restricted to assigning just a few addresses.

Your laptop's WiFi configuration should be set to Infrastructure Mode, and should be able to connect to "Any" SSIDs.

It really depends on how you have the router configured , if you have WEP configured and a non default SSID and or mac filtering on the router then these all have to match on the wireless nic card settings or it will never pull an address . If everything matches it should automatically pull an address from the router . Of course I have heard XP has some issues with it's zero configuration utility . You could be running into something like this
