Hey all,

Well this problem has got me well and truly stumped.

Got a wireless router+modem. Everything was working fine until one day no internet on the pc. Router still connected and connection to adsl still active (in routers configuration page).

Turned all security off and still no internet. IT says found web page but just sits there and doesn't load it. I have now formatted and reinstalled Windows XP Pro and still the same!

I have tried a brand new router and still the same.

Has anyone got any suggestions on what it could be? Cheers in advance

Have you paid the account for your ADSL service?! If you're not on a fixed WAN IP, do you see a new WAN IP assigned after the modem/router initially logs on? Assuming no errors show up when it initially logs into the DSL circuit, then this suggests the problem is outside of your control. Contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider).

Sorry forgot to say... Internet works fine when using usb modem.

Just checked IP and I do get a different one every time the router connects.

I am completely lost to why this is happening :(

When you connect up to the DSl modem via USB the internet is fine?

But when you connect via a Ehternet connection nothing?

When you first installed the modem did you do it with a USB connection if so and now you want to switch to Ether you will have to install the drivers for the ethernet dsl modem to do so. Sounds like you are using the generic drivers.

Remember when installing it ask you which one you are using USB or Ether and loads up the proper drivers for the set up you required.

Thanks for the replys.

No, im using the wireless part of the router/modem. The internet works fine when I use a seperate usb modem (solely usb). When I connect to the router/modem wirelessly I do not get any internet.

The router says it is connected but IE will just download any webpages. Theres no connection to the internet from Windows.

I tried a laptop this evening (brand new, with vista) and another router/modem, Same thing! :(

formating your machine was a bit mean..

look in the router check dhcp is set to auto, the network icon in bottom right screen double tap see in support if you are getting a ip address from the router

bring up a DOS prompt type: ipconfig /all post it here for us to see.....

The wireless connection from the pc to the router is fine as I can log into the router no problem at all. Im not at my mums house at the mo but I know roughly what IPs they are.

IP: 192.168.1.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
gateway: 192.168.1.1

Will double check these next time im there.

I have setup the router in my flat and it works fine, change the username and password and plug it in at my mums and it doesn't give any internet. Its gotta be something to do with my ISP. Ive tried speaking to them several times and they just say nothing has changed.

You haven't said what make and model for your modem/router - that might be helpful to know...

I'm assuming this modem/router has an Ethernet port, so try connecting via that rather than wireless. This removes one item in the chain so you can get down to basics first. Introduce wireless later...

1. Temporarily disable the wireless facility on your computer.

2. Go into Control Panel and open Internet Options.

3. Click on Connections tab, and ensure Never dial a connection is selected.

4. Lower down the page, click on LAN settings and ensure Automatically detect settings is selected. Where appropriate click Apply and Ok, and close Control Panel.

5. Now open Network Connections, select Local Area Connection, click Properties, and double click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).

6. Make sure you have both Obtain an IP Address automatically and Obtain DNS Server address automatically selected. Click Ok.

7. For good measure reboot the computer, and see if you can connect to a web address.
