have had Linksys router with wireless access for 4 yrs now. Recently, I have been unable to connect to the internet. I am unable to " Renew IP address". The desktop is connected directly to router & connects to internet ( as does the laptop when directly connected).I have tried several things to no avail.
1. Repaired Windows XP
2. Tried a netgear card- the card recognises the network- but cannot renew ip address
3.used ipconfig/reelase & renew- unable to do so -"Operation Was Attempted on Something That Is Not a Socket"
4. i deleted the Winsock and Winsock2 files -reinstalled TCP/Ip
5. Tried WinsockXPfix

Please help!

So your isp is a wireless connection? Please give more info.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

Upgrade the router firmware. It sounds as if there is a DHCP issue, either on issueing an IP or renewing the IP. In the alternative, use static IPs for both desktop and notebook. You can use IPs 192.168.1.2 - .99, and .150 - .253; the subnet mask would be 255.255.255.0, Gateway the router IP (default 192.168.1.1), and you can either put into the DNS server addresses the IPs of the DNS servers from your ISP or just use the gateway IP of 192.168.1.1

Several other possibilities:

. Upgrade to Service Pack 2. This will redo your Winsock and TCP/IP stacks, but see the comment in faq779-4625

. The repair order for your IP service stacks should be:
i. Winsock stack repair (use WinsockFix, see faq779-4625)
ii. Repair the TCP/IP service stacks. See the second half of this MS KB article:
. For service pack 2 installations, some have found a solution in the Advanced properties sheet for TCP/IP, Options, TCP/IP filtering, Properties, Enable filtering by clicking the checkbox, then set all three radio buttons to 'Permit All.'

Thanks for the suggestions- I will try the Windows update today. It indeed sounds like the DHCP problem
