Hi All

Wonder if you can help out a newbie to wireless....

I have a Dlink G510 wireless card nic the PC, running Windows XP SP2. This connects to a Netgear DG834G router.

The conection will be fine, and I can surf the internet no problems, but the connection drops about ~5 minutes of use(even tho the signal is good on both the card & the router)

I have tried setting a static IP address on the PC and i have disbaled all WEP etc (and setup an access list so only i can conect ;~)).

If i repair the connection (after its dropped) it starts to work again, for another 5 minutes.....

Anyone come across a simular problem?

Disable 802.1x authentication under the properties sheet of the wireless connection.

Hi bcastner

Just checked, its disabled, but i have tried this setting both on and off....

Had it working for up to an hour yesterday but it dropped again....

Going to swap the wireless nic in the machine - its all i can think of... tried turning off the mobile phones and the cordless house phone as well...

Wireless doesnt seem to be a proven technology yet?!?!

It does sound like the card in the computer if faulty.
As far as wireless being a proven thing, I have been using wireless for several years on three computers, and have never had any problems with any of them. Run them 24/7 also.
I'm using the 'LINKSYS Wireless-B 2.4 GHz Broadband Router and the cards that go with it in the computers.
If a new card doesn't do it, try switching systems. I have a friend that uses it as well, and he's not had any problems from the get go either.

Good Luck and hope it starts working for you.

From my own personal experience and much reading of internet forums, the problem probably lies with the Netgear router. I've got this same model of router and have never had any problems with it, but I have bought it fairly recently and it came with v1.05 firmware.

I had a colleague who had an older DG834G router, the router was v unstable and strugglged to get a reliable connection.

If you don't already have v1.05 of the firmware, download it. I haven't needed to do it myself, but I've read on some forums that it's a good idea to do a factory reset after upgrading firmware to improve chances of success. You'll have to re-enter config, don't try to backup and restore the configuration into a file.

As stated on this netgear page, wireless stability is one of the bugs fixes in v1.05 of the firmware:

Good luck
