Wireless connection unstable

Over the past two days, my connection to my Netgear Wireless ADSL Firewall Router has repeatedly dropped and has become increasingly difficult to reconnect to.

I use Windows Vista Premium and have had no problems whatsoever until now.
After the connection drops, I search for wireless networks, and sometimes it can't see the router despite being practically on top of it, and other times, it says the router is there, with a signal strength very high. Sometimes, then it will connect, but just for a few minutes before disconnection and disappearing.
I have tried "wiring" the router to the PC directly with the cable and it connects immediately, and the connection is totally stable.
Then I try to return to wireless, and the problem returns.

I have tried it now on BOTH my PC's with the same results.

Is the router past it ?

Cheers

It sounds like you have some other type of interference in your area. Perhaps a microwave oven or a 2.4 Ghz cordless phone..

Could be interference. You may want to change channels and see if the problem disappears.

Cheers guys.
No other equipment has been introduced into the house so can't imagine what could be interfering. Will have a thorough check though.

Can't understand why after placing the router less than 3 inches from the wireless card of the PC, it still only managed to locate the network twice in ten attempts ??

Try turning power to the router completely off, leave it 3 or 4 minutes, then switch back on. Wait for it to reinitialize, then try a connection.

Also, check to see if there are any other wireless networks in your neighbourhood which you are maybe picking up. If yes, then note their channel numbers and try changing the router's AP to a different one, preferably spaced at least two channels away from the one(s) in use.

As a last resort, see if there are any suitable firmware upgrades to your Netgear router.

Have d/l the latest firmware, and have left router switched off overnight, but still the same.
My laptop does pick up on other networks, but I have no idea how to change channels....

Thanks

get some monitoring software to locate other wirelesses, if you look into the setting up of your access wireless it will show you the ch set try and get of the ch that everyone else is using, also in the connection delete any that is not yours, this will help you a lot... even when placing the laptop next to the ap if it has detected another ap in your network connection if it is still transmitting and has tried to lock on or you have tried to aquire it it will pick that one first try as said to delete it in connections (not view wireless connections)
good luck
