Hello,

I know very little about networks so I hope this is a really obvious problem.

I have a Linksys 2.4 broadband wireless router and an IBM t40 thinkpad which i have just received. My flatmate also has a laptop of another brand.

My flatmate can connect to the wireless network trouble free and has been using it regularly for many months. I have just received my thinkpad from work and although i can connect and use the wireless for a period it always seems to disconnect after 5 to 10 minutes. This is nothing to do with signal as if i reconnect everything is fine (plus my flatmate never has this problem). I use the laptop next to the router so there are no distance issues involved.

Is there some setting I need to change?

Thanks for any help!

Only thing I have seen do this is power management, either of the PC itself (hibernation / screen saver etc) or of the wireless device (card / adapter). On our wireless devices, there is an auto-powersave option that will auto-disconnect after a few minutes of non-activity. Once we turned this off, we never got disconnections.

Make sure you have the latest firmware for your IBM wireless NIC. If it is Centrino then either download the latest driver from IBM's website or directly from Intel's website. Also you may need to have the latest firmware on your W/L router. Check release notes from your AP manufacturer to see if they address issues specific to W/L NIC compatibility. If you still have issues then try adjusting your transmit power to a lower value. This is true especially if your unit is very close to the AP.

Also make sure that the 802.1x authentication mode didnt get enabled accidentally. After certain hotfixes, this option will be automatically enabled.

I was having this same issue on my dell laptop. I completely erased the WIFI from the config utility, recreated it, and havent had a problem since
