My wireless Network Connection on my laptop is disabled. When I right click and select enable the status changes to not connected even though there is a connection available. When I select view wireless connections under choose wireless connection it says - windows cannot configure this wireless connection- If you have enabled another program to manage this wireless connection, use that software. If you want windows to configure this wireless connection start the wireless zero configuration (WZC) service. Any ideas on how to get this working? Thanks

Depending upon the type of laptop, there may be a button on the keyboard to activate the wireless device. It will be something like an upturned triangle, and you'll need to press and hold the laptop's <Fn> key, then press the "triangle" key. Alternatively, there might be a slider type button located somewhere else on the laptop case, maybe the side...

In order to configure the wireless connection, you may already have a programme installed which will enable you to do this. Carefully look through your list of programmes, or visit the laptop manufacturer's website for info.

Thanks for the reply but I do not have anything that remotely rsembles an upside down triangle on my laptop (IBM thinkpad). I also do not have any slider button on or around the case. The connection itself now says not connected but wont give me an option to search for any networks. Strange.

Was this wirless card pre-installed on your laptop or did you add it?

To start the MZC
Click start
Right click on My computer
Click on Manag
Expand Services and Applications
Click on services
Locate Wireless Zero Configuration
Right click
Click start.

When frustrated remember, in the computer world there is almost always a backdoor.

Thanks Beowulf005, the card was pre-installed on the laptop. I followed the steps above and it kicks me an Unable to open Wireless Zero Configuration for reading on local computer. Error 5: Access is Denied.
Thats weird. I see that the little wireless light on the laptop itself is lit up.

i too had the same problem. there is lock on the right side for the laptop to open. on the left side there is another set of button which disables the wireless connection. if you can see on the other side of the laptop opening button.u will find another similar one which locks the wireless connection and prevents to access wireless network.

The think pad has FN + F5 key for wireless button and it was mentioned by GOA0Z above.

secondly if you must be having ibm vantage connections for wireless. Till the wireless network is established u cannot use both the windows and ibm vantage connections tool. When u click on ibm vantage connections and view the properties of the host SSID on the popup windows click on the properties and which in turn opens up another window where you have an checkbox option on the top saying let windows do the configuration for the network. I have seen system won't let both the windows and ibm vantage connections tool to help you out.

The second option is if you have the original SSID and password which u used to register with your wireless router. You use the same id and password on the laptop. it should fix your problem.

I tried the FN + F5 and nothing happened. The wireless indicator light is on though. It occasionally goes off and then comes back on. I am not using IBM vantage, I am only using windows. I right click the wireless icon in my system tray and try to view the connections from there. As far as I know I dont even have IBM vantage installed on this system.
