Wireless connect two Pcs

What i m trying to do is to connect a laptop(Winxp) to a desktop(Win2k3 without active directory or DNS).

I ve installed a netgear wireless 54 mbps yo the desktop and i setup an ad-hoc connection.

After that i gave manually 2 ip addresses to my machines in the same net (that is 192.168.30 and 192.168.31).

The two pcs say that they are connected to the same network but they cannot see each other under windows neibourhood or ping.

I m doing something wrong? Thanks

Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.
