Wireless client appliance connecting to various APs ???

What I am trying to do is basically get the same functionality as a desktop pc accessing a AP but from some appliance rather than a pc. This appliance would connect to an existing 5 dbi omni antenna. I have looked at Cisco's AP and thinking I could set it up as a workgroup bridge; however, setting this up like this will only get it to work with other Cisco AP and bridges (no other brands of AP). Is anyone doing this and if so, what equipment are you using to get this done.
