Wireless Bridging Strange Behaviour

Hi All,

I have a wireless connection from my house, to a friends about 50m up the road. They are pretty much line of sight and the connection works quite well (sometimes!)

I am using 2x Netgear WG602v2 in bridging mode using 11Mb/s chan 6 mode B.

My question is this.. When pinging from my PC to his PC, although the response times are 1 - 2 ms, the success rate is almost exactly 50%. One success, one fail etc. Is this a normal way for wifi to operate or do I have an incorrect setting ? ie are the pings being buffered on the local AP until a transmit is warrented or something ? Wrong MTU or TTL ?

Here is an example :-

Request timed out.
Reply from 10.0.0.136: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=64
Request timed out.
Reply from 10.0.0.136: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=64
Request timed out.
Reply from 10.0.0.136: bytes=32 time=2ms TTL=64

Weird huh ;)

You say that you have "pretty much" line of site? Ok. RF line of site and visual line of site are NOT the same. To get a clear understanding of RF line of site you have to understand how the signals propogate from the diodes (antenna). Also, several things in an environment can affect RF communications. The number one culprit? Water. Do you have any large bodies of water, rivers, ponds, or lakes nearby or perhaps between you guys? Are there other buildings between your house and his (it doesn't matter if you think it's clear LOS). Google these terms, read about them so you'll know what they mean, then see if you have any of this going on. The terms are diffraction,refraction,reflection,scattering, absorbtion, wave propagation. Use "rf" in the search, for example google for "RF Absorbtion". Post back what ya find.
