Wireless Access Point

Can someone explain to me what a "Wireless Access Point" is?

I want to setup a wireless network in a room so that people there can access the LAN thru the wireless network. What do I need? The existing LAN is providing DHCP, Proxy and many other services. Is a "Wireless Access Point" device enough? How many users does it support and how distant does it cover?
