Wireless access point trouble when added to existing network

i am trying to add wireless internet access to a room of my office as it is if a computer is pluged in to the wall DHCP does its job and the internet works fine but when adding a access point or router to that same jack the router cant get to the internet. anyone have any ideas

How is the office jack hooked up? Is this a corporation where your office jack runs back to a switch which is hooked to the corporate backbone or is this just run back to a cable or dsl modem ? If its a corporate network then it probably won't work , it could be almost anything not knowing the corporate network structure. Also most corporations have strict regulations about putting random AP's or routers on the corporate network . If this is a home network then it sounds like a AP or router config problem .

Is it an Access Point or a wireless Router?

If a wireless router, disable the DHCP server on the router, and use a regular LAN port on the router (not the WAN port) to make the connection. Set the router to obtain a DHCP determined address.

You will have to configure an SSID, and any security settings such as WEP to conform to the settings of the wireless adapter in your workstation.

we use a t1 but by no means have a corp network. about 10 pc and linksys router using dhcp

i have tried both netgear access points and routers with no luck

netgear tech support cant figure it out it has to be something with my network.

all i want is the internet!

Have you tried using a cross-over cable?
