Guys, Geniuses .. :)

Im managing 2 networks for a small IT firm located about 5 kms apart, i've been asked to do sum research on how to set up wireless transmitters above the rooftops of both premisess and allow registered users within a 2-5 Km radius access to the internet, but they will be issued with passwords to enable access.

both premisses are linked to an ISP via Fiber cable with speeds upto 4mb/s down and 512 up

in brief, please explain how you guys would do this.

any suggestions, tips, tricks etc would be much appreciated.

thnx and looking forward to your responses.
regards

Hi

There are devices called Terrestial Microwave transmitters\reveivers which can cover these distances, must be line of site and can not see thru building, trees etc. - its just a dish like device at each end with a signal transmitter\receiver.
We did one at about 10 Kms and the site at the other end could not be seen so we setup arials using a map and compass. Worked fine.
There may also be some directional wireless devices which could cover this distance, but I will leave that to others.
Can not remember any names, but we just found them in the phone book, these days just goodle for them as tehy are more common than you think.

Regards

Dave.

I want to clarify your question...

Are you saying that you want to provide wireless between these buildings or you want to provide wireless to users around (outsideof) these buildings (2-5 kms)?

Dan

thanks for the replies,

yes, id like to allow clients offsite (100-250) access to our internet connection, it know it can be done, i have found the software to install and firmware required for the wireless router, just the hardware offsite, as in, access points, signal boosters, mesh dishes etc, what would be the best equipment to allow this to happen.

You can always set up a wireless router ( access points) with antennas - you would have to do some research to find the proper antenna to use, - right now to cover my whole warehouse I use (1- Netgears Wireless g- Router - 2 - Access Points with 9 decimbal antennas) - this gives me coverage about 300 yards circumfrence per device - and it is not effected by weather or line of site, or other buildings. This isn't the biggest but you get the idea, So what you need to do is design what you want and do some heavy research on antenna strentgh and the devices neede to power these devices. Yes it can be done but it might not be cost effecient to do so.

In order to achieve a 2-5 Km radius Wifi signal access you need gear like this 2.4GHz Bidirectional Amplifier:
You also need a line of sight Wifi bridge such as this:
You also need a client management software but your biggest problem will be bandwidth. You're only providing 4mb/s down and 512 up and you want to serve 100-250 clients, you may find you're having issues with bandwidth. One last thing, are you responsible for supporting these clients when they have hard time connecting? This will turn into a full time job :)
