Wired vs. wireless problem.

Laptop with Vista Home on it. Have a hardwired RJ45 and have a wireless connection. Hardwired seems to get lost after a bit. Doesn't seem to keep communicating. Wireless is much, much faster and doesn't seem to slow at all. Disabled wireless, still same results on wired broadband connection.

Figured metric would be the problem, but with the wireless disabled I would think it would not matter.

Any suggestions?

Two things I can thing of off the top of my head:
1) The wired port hardware on the laptop is malfunctioning
2) A mis-match in the configuration, such as speed and duplex.

To what are you trying to connect with the hardwired connection and what are the settings?
 
You should see entries in the event log if the card keeps dropping the wired connection, so I would have a look there for starters.

I would also force your network card to full speed\duplex rather than relying on it getting it automatically, I would actually do it on both devices (laptop and switch) if you can (obviously not possible if it's a dumb switch).

Don't discount the issue being with another device or even the cable though.

I respectfully disagree, that would be bad practice.

Auto/auto is the standard way for ethernet interfaces to be configured and has been for quite a few years now.

You should only nail your speed setting if your troubleshooting leads you to that conclusion, eg,:
- no connectivity, due to your devices are negotiating Gb, but the cable does not have all 8 wires working.


You should only nail your duplex settings if you troubleshoot your issue and find you cannot eliminate a duplex issue any other way. Duplex issues are common and are nowadays usually the result of people frigging with the Duplex setting instead of just leaving it on Auto. (In the old days, they were the result of cranky old equipment).
And the more you start frigging with Duplex settings the more Duplex issues you will get.

As advised above, it's worth checking your event log. Then, check your switch logging, then switch config.
Setup a continuous ping from your laptop to your switch and observe it for a while (or pipe it to a file which you can read later). The pattern of the ping responses will often tell you what's wrong.
 
Thanks for all the help. Got disgusted with the support from the DSL supplier and replaced everything from the phone line up to the laptop RJ45 with a filter and 2WIRE modem. Used the supplied cable that I had tested with a cable tester. The whole system was up in 10 minutes including wireless that was integral with the 2WIRE. NO I'M NOT AFFILIATED WITH 2WIRE. In fact the modem is one that lightning blew the power supply on and I had to replace the ps. Works great, and thank you for your support.
