wiping hard drive

my friend is trying to wipe his hard drive but his keyboard freezes up and the software he's using to wipe hard drive stops working.his operating system is windows xp home edition can anyone help? windows xp setup freezes also

Where's he running the 'wipe' from - a bootable floppy/Cd?

Sounds like a hardware issue of some kind - why is he wiping the drive - previous problems?

Look in Device Manager for the make of hard drive, most have free downloadable utilities for writing zeros to the drive.

I agree it sounds like some other hardware issues.
