o.k., here is the low down..I've tried every which way to get xp out and put 98 in...so far it's been fruitless...
1)ran debug (as discribed by frank) & seemed to work. Install of 98 frooze 3/4 way through..did not work.
2)used partition magic 8 to make fat32 partitions..did not help.
3)unpartitioned drive & tried as single drive..did not work.

FRESH START:
-i first removed xp from sys
-used 98 start-up disk to install drivers
-used debug as mentioned by frank in another thread
-used f-disk, rebooted, formatted, rebooted
-again installed drivers from a: drive
-installed win98, only made it 3/4 way then freeze up

Question:
does the debug work with new dell?
sys is: dell 4600 series, 3 gigahertz, 250g harddrive..
harddrive has new style ide cable (looks like a thick wire, not wide/flat like ide's i've seen before)..
maxtor partitioner does not recognize harddrive even though it is a maxtor drive(because new style or to large for older max partition to read??)..
has dell put something in new systems to block changes??
has dell & microsoft done ??? together to stop changes??
am i paranoid??
