just starting to use remote desktop
when i log in to another computer the person on that computer gets logged out and the log in screen shows
if they log back in i get logged out
is this normal
how can i set it up so he can see what I'm doing to his machine (sort of a remote teaching tool)
or do i need a third party software to do this

This is normal behavior for RDP in Windows XP. The capability you are looking for can be achieved by using 'Remote Assistance' a built-in feature of Windows XP, or using a third party utility such as VNC. There are many different versions of VNC, I have provided a link to RealVNC below.
