Sometimes the best way to get what your looking for is to just put it out there.. :)

The scenario: A very small group of computers/users, who have recently been having fun with the remote shutdown command in WinXP.

The Question: How to "prevent" someone from being able to execute a remote shutdown command on a given PC.

If it's possible, could you please provide a detailed description of exactly how the remote shutdown command does what it does (I want to dissect this process to learn more about it)

Thanks!

To find out how to use it, open command prompt and type shutdown /?
you can also run it from Run.exe
To disable it do the following;
Start -> Run -> C;\windows\system32 -> right click on shutdown.exe -> Properties -> Security and then add the group you wish to block and select deny for full control
(This is presuming you are not using simple file sharing, if not do the following;
open windows explorer -> tools -> Folder options -> View tab -> in advanced settings uncheck 'Use Simple File Sharing')

So would I have to do that on the offending machine or on the machine subject to the shutdown?

I guess the bigger question is, When someone issues the shutdown command from computer "A" to computer "B" is he actually executing the shutdown command on computer "B" ??

Thanks for the responses, I've set the deny permissions and that seems to do the trick in this scenario.

Thanks again!
