Hope this is the right spot if not please redirect me to the correct forum. :)

I just recently began having trouble with my sony dru830a dvd drive (or winxp has). I use Acronis for my backups and a couple days ago tried to use it to backup and Acronis kept wanting a disc (which I put in). Acronis will or can not use the drive to make a backup.

I checked 'My Computer' and xp list the drive as a dvd-ram drive when empty and as cd rom drive with either a cd or dvd disc inserted.

Today I purchased a Liteon LH 20A1P dvd writer to replace a dvd rom drive and have the same problem. (The dvd rom drive was identified and had worked correctly.)

I've uninstalled the drivers and reinstalled them several times but xp is still doing its 'thing' with the 2 drives. The only way I could get xp to install the drivers was to point to windows/inf directory.

I had Nero 7 check both drives and it gives all the specs for the drives correctly. If I try to make an InCD (huge floppy on cd) the program just sits there and xp will not let Nero access the drive (nor can Acronis).

Bios correctly identifies the drives as does device manager.

I finally checked the box for recording on the device in properties and windows and Nero will make a disc but Acronis still will not do any backups.

If anyone has any clues as to where to head or what to try next it would be much appreciated.

I would like to have my drives back and operating as they should. I like Acronis and my 'big floppies'.

Thanks for reading a rather long post.

i've never had this problem but first thing to do would be to Google your problem or search the forum for the problem instead of posting for a quick answer.

Thanks for reply TheCloak.

Actually I did do as you suggested about googling and searching forums.

I donated my old dvd rom to my son-in-law and purchased the new drive. After installation the same problem popped up immediately and that is when I decided to post. Wasn't really looking for a quick answer. Just hoping someone may have run into a similar situation.

Still trying using different wording on searches in hopes of running across same or similar problem.

Firmware flash the Writer, download the manufacturers utility and latest flash for the drive.
Pretty easy to do.
